Fuel-Level Sensors for Data Centre Backup Generators

Diesel generators provide an important source of backup power when the primary electrical supply is interrupted. Monitoring the fuel available within the generator system can therefore form an important part of data centre resilience.

Deeter designs custom sensors and switches for data centre fuel tanks and diesel generator fuel systems. Depending on the application, a diesel generator fuel level sensor can detect specific low or high liquid levels, incorporate several switching points or provide continuous fuel-level measurement.

When specifying a fuel level sensor for a diesel generator, factors such as the tank dimensions, fuel, mounting arrangement, required outputs and installation environment must all be considered.

Where the system is classified as a potentially explosive atmosphere, Deeter can provide ATEX level sensors and float switches based on its certified product ranges. This may include an ATEX float switch for point-level detection or a continuous sensor for monitoring changing fuel levels.

The correct sensor and certification will depend on the fuel system, installation environment and project specification.

Coolant-Level Sensors for Data Centre Cooling Systems

Deeter sensors are also used to measure coolant within data centre cooling systems. Where liquid coolant is stored or circulated, dependable level measurement can help the wider monitoring or control system identify changes in the available coolant level.

A coolant-level sensor can be designed to provide defined low or high-level switching, multiple switching points or continuous liquid-level measurement. The required materials, float, sensor length, mounting arrangement and outputs are selected according to the coolant, tank design and operating conditions.

This allows Deeter to support custom cooling-system applications without limiting customers to a fixed, standard sensor configuration.

Where required, LVCSi FP-based configurations can also incorporate temperature sensing and Modbus communications, allowing liquid-level and temperature information to be integrated into the wider monitoring or control system.

Point-Level and Continuous-Level Measurement

Custom data centre sensors can be based on two established Deeter product ranges.

The F/S FP Series flameproof float switch provides point-level detection using a magnetic float and reed-switch sensor stem. It can incorporate up to seven switching points on one stem, with custom lengths and mixed normally open and normally closed switching arrangements available.

The LVCSi FP provides continuous liquid-level measurement and includes an integrated display. Available options include analogue outputs, digital set-point outputs, optional temperature sensing and optional Modbus communications.

Depending on the application, available features can include:

  • Custom sensor stems up to six metres
  • 316L stainless steel wetted components
  • Custom switching points and mounting arrangements
  • Point-level or continuous-level measurement
  • ATEX and IECEx-certified configurations

Custom-Designed Sensors for Data Centre Projects

The sensors Deeter supplies for data centre applications are custom-designed around individual project requirements. Although they are based on established Deeter sensor technology, each configuration can be adapted to suit the particular tank, liquid and control system.

Factors considered during specification include the liquid being measured, tank dimensions, required sensor length, mounting position, switching points, outputs, communications, operating temperature and pressure, and any hazardous-area requirements.

Once these requirements have been confirmed, Deeter can prepare a drawing and unique product number identifying the agreed sensor configuration.
